IMG_2155One of the first projects requested of and completed entirely by the FAB Lab was the need for name tags for CE fellows and staff. Danielle DeVoss – one of the ambassadors for the CE and a professor in WRAC – said that there was a need for the name tags so that outside students and faculty coming into the CE for the first time would know who was an employee of the space. Scott Schopieray – Director of the CE – said that he liked the idea because it helped to personalize the CE experience. Generally, the name tags were created in order to ease the CE experience and assist others in knowing who to seek out for help on specific projects.
The name tags were designed by our graduate Fellow, Peter Lusch. They were made out of acrylic and utilized the recently purchased laser-cutter and the newly created FAB Lab space. The CE logo was utilized in making the design Peter chose to use a magnet (rather than a pin) so as to avoid poking holes in people’s clothing. This project was a milestone for the FAB Lab. As Peter said, “This was the first FAB Lab project that had an impact on everyone in the CE.” It was created by CE staff, for CE staff, taking advantage of the design process. A need was defined, and a solution was brainstormed, prototyped, and implemented to satisfy that need. And that is what the FAB Lab is all about: finding resources, fostering ideas, and utilizing the tools required to make those ideas come to fruition.
